Reception Area

As part of a large construction project which re-modelled the main entrance to the school, Shield were asked to design and deliver a fully functioning new reception area which would give visitors a fantastic first impression.

We produced several drawings including a number of 3D renders which helped the school team visualise our designs.  We fitted a bespoke reception desk, feature lighting a unique display case and a large, glazed glass ‘box’ which formed a secure foyer to the entrance of the building.

We were asked to replace existing furniture in two laboratories.  We designed bespoke student islands which allowed for all services to run the length of the islands, providing gas, water and electricity to all students whilst retaining a forward-facing position within the classroom.

We installed new teachers desks with the provision of all services thus allowing for full practical demonstration in front of the whole class.  All base units were finished in light grey and worktops in Trespa Ice Blue.

We refurbished an existing laboratory and converted two adjacent classrooms into a new laboratory space.  We completed a full rip-out of the existing rooms and removed an internal dividing wall.  We ‘Diamond drilled’ the floor to provide new services to the room, installed a full air exchange system with new ductwork, new flooring, and a suspended ceiling with energy efficient LED lighting.  Both rooms were fitted with bespoke student and teacher desking systems.  Gas taps, electrical sockets and sinks and taps were fitted within all student and teacher desks.  All base units were finished in Graphite grey and Velstone worktops fitted throughout.

As part of the construction of a new build science block, Shield were asked to design, supply and install all new furniture for four new laboratories and two preparation rooms.  We designed a unique island ‘pod’ which was fixed to the floor, this allowed for the provision of gas and electrics to run up to counter mounted taps and sockets.  Student desking was designed to fit around these pods, creating some flexibility of layout within each classroom.

Full perimeter units were installed including fireclay sinks and Broen laboratory taps.  Bespoke teachers desks with integrated gas, sinks and electrical sockets were installed in each room allowing for full practical demonstrations in front of the whole class.  In each prep room we installed full height shelving, fixed wall units and new technician desking.  All units were finished in Graphite grey with Velstone ‘Silver Dust’ worktops throughout.

To help the client visualise the new layouts, we produced both 2D and 3D images and  detailed 3D technical drawings of the bespoke pod system.

– The Nutting Room

We were asked to convert an existing changing / shower room block into a new classroom.  We conducted a full rip out, including demolishing existing internal walls and blocking doorways to create a single room.  We installed a full air handling system, new flooring, suspended ceiling with new LED lighting and decorated throughout.

We designed a bespoke teacher wall to span the width of the room allowing for flexible storage with integrated white boards and interactive digital screen.

– Food Technology

We completely re-modelled and refurbished an existing Food Technology classroom which facilitated an increase in students able to access the space and allowed for more practical, teacher led demonstrations to take place within the room.

We completed an initial rip-out of all existing appliances and furniture.  This included removing internal walls and bracing the ceiling with new structural timbers.  We laid new flooring, installed a suspended ceiling, introduced a full air handling system and fully decorated throughout.

We installed new units throughout the room by introducing workstation ‘islands’ around the perimeter. This layout allows a pair of students to have access to an oven, hob, sink and additional power.

We installed a new bespoke teachers desk complete with hob / oven, dedicated sink and electrical sockets.

– Laboratories

Having previously refurbished two general laboratories at the school, Shield were invited back to look at two more existing laboratories within the science block that needed modernisation.

We completed a full rip out of the existing laboratories before laying new flooring, new suspended ceilings, introducing air conditioning and air handling and full CO2 monitoring.  We installed new perimeter units which incorporated Gratnell storage trays, new fireclay sinks, gas taps and new electrical sockets.  New bespoke teacher desks were installed with all relevant services running to them.  Perimeter units were finished with graphite grey doors with light grey trim, teacher desks were finished in light grey to complement the overall look.  All worktops were Velstone Silver Dust.

for Girls - Library

Chelmsford School for Girls recently converted an existing sports hall into a beautiful, large open space to house a new library.   Shield were asked to refurbish this space to enable quiet study, research, and small meetings to take place within the room.

We supplied and installed modular, steel shelving to the perimeter of the room, this was specifically chosen to match some of the schools existing library shelving.  All the shelving was adjustable to allow for various sized books.  All shelving units which protruded into the main library space were fitted with full height beech end panels to improve the aesthetic.

Shield also supplied and installed metal framed relay desking, with cable management trays, which facilitated twelve computers and monitors to be installed.

We provided bespoke booth seating and a number of low-level comfort pods to allow for both group reading and individual study.  A full reception desk, office desking, chairs and free standing tables were also supplied and installed.

– Library

Shield were approached to help Wells Hall Primary School fully furnish a new library space.  The school wanted the space to be both functional and inspiring with areas where the children could find their own space to read whilst also allowing for group reading lessons.

Shield designed and built curved bookcases to help flow within the space whilst also providing secluded areas for smaller groups.  The bookcases were all fitted with adjustable shelving to accommodate various book sizes.  All were fitted with heavy duty castors to allow them to be moved when required.

Shield also supplied some fixed individual desk units for more formal reading and some brightly coloured ‘mushroom’ style stools which can easily be moved to accommodate different groups.
